Today Stevenson Engineering maintains over 400 pieces of mobile equipment and plant for a wide range of customers.
In 1939 the original Stevenson workshop was opened in Pukekohe and then in 1953, relocated to Otahuhu, staff by Johnny Vendt and Merv Lowe. Equipment consisted of two lathes, a radial drill and a milling machine. At that time most of Stevenson Engineering’s customers were other divisions within the Stevenson Group involved in roading, infrastructure, quarrying and mining. Over the years the machine shop expanded and out grew the Otahuhu premises and a purpose built facility was developed in Lady Ruby Drive, East Tamaki (1988) on the site of the then exhausted Stevenson East Tamaki quarry.
John Vendt moved to East Tamaki to oversee the transition and retired in 1990 after 40 years service. A few of John’s apprentices are still with the company today, David Young Jnr (Engineering Manager) and Jason Cancare (Technical Account Manager), maintaining Stevenson Engineering’s reputation for quality and experience. The new workshops are equipped with state of the art C.NC. machinery and large capacity metal working machines.
In 2006 the workshop premises were substantially redeveloped and extended to include modern purpose built open plan, air conditioned, offices with a large training facility to support apprentice and staff training. A large new Parts facility was also established along with a sophisticated security system.
In 2008 the weld shop was extended to provide increased capacity and to house the new purpose-built WAG multi-surfacer automatic welding station – the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
Similarly, the Truck and Heavy plant maintenance workshops continue to grow, to the point that this building was also extended in 2006. We have over 30 specialised mechanics in these departments and the mammoth job of managing all these resources falls to Graham Hosking (Service Manager – Stevenson TCL Isuzu).
Today, whilst Stevenson Engineering continues to look after the engineering needs of the Stevenson Group (these in-house customers often providing the toughest of challenges!) the company is now firmly focused on becoming New Zealand’s leading mechanical and engineering support company.
In 2008 Stevenson Engineering established Stevenson Marine Services, in response to customer demand. Stevenson Marine operates from premises in Pine Harbour Marina supported by our workshop premises in East Tamaki.
In 2010 the Greymouth Alliance was formed between Stevenson Engineering and Sandvik Mining & Construction. The Alliance’s vision is to be the West Coast’s leading provider of equipment, and heavy engineering solutions to the mining and construction industries.
