Stevenson Engineering scored two prestigious awards in the recent Westpac Auckland Central Business Awards 2011. Category winners were announced at a black-tie gala dinner at the Langham Hotel on November 10.

CEO Tony Coombe’s inspiring leadership was acknowledged with the Excellence in Business Leadership Award, sponsored by Marsh. The company won a second award for Excellence in Service Delivery, sponsored by RSM Prince. Stevenson Engineering was also selected as a finalist in the Workplace Safety Award category.

Co-ordinated by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, these annual business awards honour and showcase local businesses and people who are outstanding in their fields.

“It’s a huge honour to have won two of the three awards for which we were shortlisted,” says Tony Coombe. “This success is due to a magnificent team effort. It is a tribute to the high calibre and expertise of my staff who have worked hard to get us to this point. We strive to set a high benchmark for quality service without compromising on safety or our sustainability standards.”

The judges of the Excellence in Service Delivery award category said in their comments: “Stevenson Engineering showed a clear customer focus and consistent dedication under all circumstances. The company exhibited a strong service ethic, underpinned by visible service policy, staff training and quality standards.”

The global financial crisis hit three months after Tony Coombe began at Stevenson Engineering. During his time at the helm he has taken the company from being one heavily reliant on its parent group into new markets to the extent that external customers now comprise 75 per cent of its business. He has increased both staff numbers and turnover.

“We were looking for the attributes and characteristics of great leaders, looking for someone who had the commercial edge, a proven track record in sustainability and someone who could lead in good times and bad,” said the judge of the Excellence in Leadership award category. “It was great to visit your workshop and see the respect that your staff had for you, not just because you were the boss, but because you were a great leader. You come across as the quintessential kiwi bloke, understated but doing a great job for your team.”

Leading in tough times was ably demonstrated when Tony Coombe guaranteed job security for six months to staff who signed up voluntarily to the nine-day fortnight scheme in late 2009. This saved 10 jobs, reduced annual leave and resulted in significant savings for the business.

“We work in partnership with our customers. We’re part of a team, with the same goals,” says Tony. “We have enhanced our service offering by taking ownership of our customers’ engineering challenges and coming up with answers that better meet their business needs. A prime example was enabling Solid Energy to have its mining equipment serviced locally by us, rather than sending it to workshops in Australia.”

Solid Energy is one of New Zealand’s major energy companies, and is also a leading producer of high quality coal for local and export markets. Previously, Solid Energy had been shipping all their mining equipment over to Australia to be serviced and repaired. This was costing them a huge amount, as well as taking up to 18 months before it was returned back into service.

They wanted an alternative solution, so they approached us with a contract for the service, repair and maintenance on their equipment. This included unit rebuilds, as well as modifying and upgrading their underground mining machines.

THE WORK

Stevenson Engineering has been working with Solid Energy since 2004. Since, we have completed several unit rebuilds, modifications and upgrades of large underground mining machines for their Huntly East and West Coast Spring Creek mines.

These machines are stripped back to their core framework for a full assessment, which includes structural testing and dismantling ancillary equipment for evaluation. The final scope of work is then determined and documented.

Once a machine has been stripped down, the electrical control boxes are sent to Australia to be certified. All the welding and mechanical refurbishment is carried out by our tradesmen, and we work with electrical engineers and designers from Solid Energy at various stages of the rebuild. We also have on-site design and certifying engineers for the upgrade stage of each rebuild.

These machines have to be sufficiently robust to operate in highly combustible conditions underground. They vary from four to thirty years in age, and are given a complete overhaul every four years to meet stringent New Zealand and Australian underground mining equipment compliance standards.

Underground mining machines like these clock up 15,000 to 20,000 hours over a four-year period of 24/7 operation and suffer a significant amount of wear and tear, which is why comprehensive servicing is needed regularly.

TIME AND COST-SAVINGS

A typical unit rebuild at our workshop takes 15 staff four to six months, compared to the 12 to 18 months it was taking when the machinery had to be shipped to Australia. By rebuilding with Stevenson Engineering, Solid Energy has been able to achieve substantial savings on cleaning, dismantling and freight costs per machine.

HOW STEVENSON ENGINEERING MADE A DIFFERENCE

OUR EXTENSIVE FACILITIES AND SKILLS

We are one of the few engineering workshops in New Zealand that has generators capable of converting power from 400 to 1000 volts in order to test drive these machines, and our ability to provide diesel engine compliance testing and emission documentation in-house means we save our customer time and money.

Our East Tamaki workshop is also large enough to accommodate these huge machines, and we have a wide range of highly skilled tradesmen capable of carrying out the job from start to finish, all under one roof.

We currently have fitter welders, diesel mechanics, line borers and machinists working on rebuilds or repairs for different items of underground mining equipment for Solid Energy, including a Joy continuous miner and Stamler coal processor, as well as loaders and shuttle cars.

THE RIGHT PROCEDURES IN PLACE

Because underground mining equipment has to adhere to stringent NSW mining standards, one of the strictest in the world, it’s important that we closely follow all procedures and supply detailed and exact documentation when working on these machines.

Full compliance and documentation is provided by us to Solid Energy at every stage, and we have weekly meetings with one of their engineers to report on our progress, with photographs provided.

Once each rebuild is complete, we provide Solid Energy with a comprehensive manual that includes repair instructions, product specifications and full documentation and compliance certifications on all product and materials.

WE GO ABOVE AND BEYOND

We’re not satisfied with just fixing what’s required and doing the bare minimum. Since undertaking the work for Solid Energy, we have taken their concerns and ideas on board to achieve the best outcome wherever and whenever we can.

This includes rebuilding equipment as smaller units to make it easier for them to pull apart for quicker service, developing braking systems and scrubber units to filter the air, as well as various upgrades to improve efficiency.

“We’ve worked closely with Solid Energy to really understand their objectives, and that’s our point of difference. In the end, we’ve come up with a better product, and it’s all due to the teamwork on both sides.” – David Pinfold, workshop supervisor.

QUALITY ACCREDITATIONS: ISO 9001 AND ENVIRO-MARK DIAMOND

On having ISO 9001

As well as adhering to the stringent mining standards, we also follow the procedures set by ISO to ensure we deliver a quality service and a high standard of work every time.

Everything has to be done to a specification and recorded, so there’s a clear paper trail should this be needed at a later date.

It’s all about reassuring Solid Energy that the work we’re doing for them is done correctly and to a standard they can be satisfied with.

ON ACHIEVING ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND CERTIFICATION

This certification helps support Solid Energy’s sustainability aims, and we work hard to ensure that all oils, fluids and waste removed from their equipment is disposed of responsibly and recycled whenever possible. Consideration to noise and dust control are also applied to the machines to create a safer working environment for the operator.

THE RESULT

So far, we have rebuilt fifteen miners for Solid Energy, including Stamler, Joy and Eimco machines. We work on a four-year cycle for each rebuild and a two-year cycle for mid-life rebuilds, and most of this work is carried out at our East Tamaki workshop. In addition to that, we also provide them with a general maintenance programme, as well as carrying out minor repairs on satellite operation sites.

“The quality of Stevenson’s work on these rebuilds is very high. Over the past six years, Stevenson has completed six major mining equipment rebuilds and also undertaken some substantial repairs. These are very specialised machines requiring adherence to lots of regulations. Stevenson Engineering has been very responsive to upskilling in this area.”

QUALITY ACCREDITATIONS: ISO 9001 AND THE ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND

ON HAVING ISO 9001

The ISO accreditation is an integral part of Stevenson Engineering’s ‘do it right first time’ culture, and we believe that it has played a role in establishing our reputation for quality.

It is especially important to customers like Ports of Auckland, because of the strict specifications around the repair and maintenance of straddle car rims. That’s why Stevenson Engineering has developed a full repair process, including a weld procedure around NZS 5054 part 5.

All our work is carried out to the procedures set by ISO, performed to a strict specification and documented for future reference, assuring every job we undertake is done in the correct manner and to the highest standard.

ON ACHIEVING THE ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND CERTIFICATION

The Enviro-Mark®NZ Diamond certification gives Ports of Auckland the knowledge that all work done by Stevenson Engineering is performed in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

As part of our commitment to the environment, a designated battery disposal shed has been built on our premises, and we take care to properly dispose of all engine oil collected from Ports of Auckland’s cranes and lifters. “We’ve always been mindful of the environment, and we’re very strict on managing spills and recycling everything we can. The Enviro-Mark®NZ Diamond certification is quite a unique achievement for an engineering company, and we’re all very proud of it.” – Bill Green, weld shop manager.

THE RESULT

In the last year alone, Stevenson Engineering has serviced over 300 wheel rims. We have also carried out many crane inspections and repaired general components for Ports of Auckland.

We believe that our success with Ports of Auckland lies in the relationships we have built over a 20-year collaboration, the skills of our experts, our facilities and the professional attitude at Stevenson Engineering, and we’re happy that Ports of Auckland is able to rely on us for a quality and on-time solution.

ON CALL, WHENEVER YOU NEED US

Ports of Auckland is an extremely busy port company with little time for the hassle of breakdowns and repairs, which is why our engineers are on hand 24/7, 365 days a year to respond to call outs and undertake urgent repairs. Helping Ports of Auckland get on with the task of connecting New Zealand businesses to the rest of the World.

New Zealand Steel uses locally sourced ironsand and coal to produce about 650,000 tonnes of steel per year. This is then turned into a range of flat steel products for both domestic and export markets.

It is also New Zealand’s largest single site employer, with close to 1200 workers at its Glenbrook Steel Mill. The Stevenson Group’s relationship with New Zealand Steel started over 30 years ago, when our construction division was involved in building the Glenbrook Steel Mill. This exposed New Zealand Steel to the quality of work and skills available at Stevenson Engineering, and from then on, we have been a preferred supplier, providing, maintaining and rebuilding plant and equipment from their primary plants through to the finishing mills.

THE WORK

New Zealand Steel counts on us to supply highly skilled teams of tradespeople for on-site shut down maintenance work, where we work on a wide range of technical repairs and maintenance. Our engineers also work with New Zealand Steel’s mobile workshop SteelServ to diagnose and repair a variety of faults.

For the past 25 years, our hydraulic division has been rebuilding 90% of New Zealand Steel’s hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders on both mobile and fixed plant, as well as re-engineering and manufacturing the hot strip mill’s swivel joints out of stainless steel. Repairable spares are sent to our workshop on a weekly basis, and this includes gearboxes, high-pressure hot water valves, filter systems, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, rolls, segments, fabrication work and much more. Beyond that, our workshop also manufactures stock items and a wide variety of replacement items for different plants at New Zealand Steel, one of them being replacement track shoes for the bucket wheel at their mine site.

HOW STEVENSON ENGINEERING MADE A DIFFERENCE

SPECIALISED SKILLS AND EXTENSIVE FACILITIES

Having such a huge depth of skills and facilities at our East Tamaki workshop means we are able to undertake the work from start to finish.

Our hydraulic division also specialises in hydraulic cylinders, something that not many places do. We know all about cylinders because we’ve been working with them for over 20 years, and we have the tools, experience and knowledge to get the job done right. New Zealand Steel recognises this, which is why we have been working on nearly all of their hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.

The weld shop at our workshop is also second to none, and we have invested heavily in automated weld technology, which has given us the edge in all weld reclamation work, on surfaces both cylindrical/flat and helical. Because of this, we have made considerable improvements in the life cycle of these rolls, which has then flowed on to less breakages and less downtime for New Zealand Steel.

We believe that our people and facilities have played a big part in providing the support and service that New Zealand Steel needs to stay at the top of their game. However, this would not have been possible without the willingness of both partners to work together and do what it takes to accomplish our goals. It’s a great example of Stevenson Group’s underlying philosophy “Successful together”.

Holcim NZ needed someone to service, maintain and rebuild their fleet of machines at the Holcim Bombay quarry. This included dump trucks, wheel loaders, excavators, pumps and more. Since winning the contract, we have been involved in a range of work, from engine rebuilds and transmission overhauls, to breakdown call-outs, repairing ground engaging tools (buckets, blades, trays) and preventative maintenance work.

As part of our service, we also provide Holcim NZ with a dedicated field service team that is available 24/7 to respond to any callouts, breakdowns and urgent repairs if needed.

HOW STEVENSON ENGINEERING MADE A DIFFERENCE

ON TIME, ON BUDGET

Our ability to deliver on time and at the right price is another important aspect of our success with Holcim NZ. It’s all about getting the machinery up and going as fast as we possibly can, and our response time, after-hours service and wide range of skill sets contribute to that. We also endeavor to work around their plant schedules, so that it’s operating at 100% all the time.

“Holcim NZ had to get their trucks rebuilt, and they wanted service work done on the engines and transmissions over Christmas. So we put in the hours, worked through the Christmas break and we met the targets. The trucks were delivered back on time, ready for work the following year.” – Ward O’Donnell, engine shop supervisor.

OUR PLACE, OR THEIRS

We have a field service team of 5 who are always on-call and available to head out to Holcim NZ’s premises when needed. Most of the equipment is serviced on-site, with the exception of bigger projects such as dump truck and component rebuilds, or truck deck relinings, which are brought back to our East Tamaki workshop. That’s because our workshop is a one-stop-shop where our staff have the skills and knowledge, backed up by facilities like the weld shop, machine shop, engine shop, hydraulics and more, which makes working on large scale projects quicker and more cost-effective.

REGULAR CONTACT

Gary Richmond, Stevenson Engineering’s account manager for Holcim NZ, believes that good communication is key, which is why he keeps in regular contact with the quarry manager and maintenance manager.

Monthly meetings are held every first Tuesday of each month to discuss plant maintenance and maintenance planning schedules. Gary also gets in touch every Monday morning to see if they have any specific requirements for the week ahead, and to check if the jobs completed the previous week met their expectations.

Steve Sagar, a field service mechanic says, “The team at Holcim NZ like knowing what’s going on, so we keep them in the loop and communicate regularly.”

QUALITY ACCREDITATIONS: ISO 9001 AND ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND

On having ISO 9001

This is where the ISO 9001 certification comes in. Everything has to be done to a specification and recorded, so there’s an audit trail should anything ever go wrong.

It’s about the assurance that the work we’re doing for Holcim is done in the correct manner, to the right level. We believe a customer needs to have confidence in our ability to deliver a high standard of work, and that we have the procedures in place to monitor that work.

ON ACHIEVING ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND CERTIFICATION

Enviro-Mark®NZ Diamond certification gives Holcim NZ the knowledge that all work done by us is performed in a safe and environmentally responsible way. Holcim NZ aims to be the national segment leader on health and safety in their industry, so we do all we can to help them achieve that goal, such as taking care to avoid spills and hazards and recycling everything we can. As part of Stevenson Engineering’s commitment to the environment and health and safety, a designated battery disposal shed has been built on our workshop’s premises, and the engine oil collected at Holcim NZ’s site is brought back to our premises so we can dispose of it properly.

THE RESULT

After four years and an average of 2,200 hours per unit per annum, it’s fair to say Holcim is a satisfied customer.

“Stevenson’s work is of a very high standard, professional and efficient. We rarely do a plant recall once an item has been serviced by Stevenson. They are extremely responsive to our needs. They listen to our problems and either have a fix put in place or make a recommendation. We are advised about when parts will be delivered and installed. Costings are provided very quickly. We are kept updated regarding the status of parts deliveries. Turnarounds on larger jobs like engine rebuilds is usually either just before or on schedule.”

Downer is a large multi-national company known for its expertise in asset management, roading, pavements and water services.

In October 2008, Downer (formerly Downer EDI Works) purchased the Excell Corporation, which included a small plant workshop that serviced Manukau City Council’s groundcare and park maintenance equipment. However, Downer has a policy of not owning or operating workshops, so the opportunity was given to Stevenson Engineering to take over and manage the workshop they had acquired. This all stemmed from an existing relationship between Downer and Stevenson Engineering going back 5 years, where we provided them with service and maintenance work on their equipment.

THE WORK

We were contracted to provide light to medium-sized equipment and vehicle maintenance for Downer. This equipment and machinery is primarily used for local body maintenance contracts, which include park maintenance and groundcare work for reserves and sports fields. Since taking over the workshop, we have serviced, repaired and maintained over 750 items of machinery, ranging from chainsaws, leafblowers and lawnmowers, to earthmoving equipment, coring machines, grass sowing machines and more.

HOW STEVENSON ENGINEERING MADE A DIFFERENCE

HAVING A PERFORMANCE-BASED CONTRACT

Because Downer is measured on very stringent key performance indicators (KPIs) by the likes of Auckland City and Manukau City Council, there is no room for error. So we put a performance-based contract in place, to show Downer that they have our support, and that we are extremely committed to delivering a quality service, each and every time.

The KPIs set by Downer measure everything we do, from our response times, quality of work and customer service. Quarterly meetings are held to review and assess the work.

“We’re the only people who use KPIs like these for Downer, and it’s a great way for them to measure us. It’s the first time we’ve ever done it at Stevenson Engineering, and it’s the first I’ve ever seen in the industry.” – Grant Wearing, general manager.

OUR ONE-STOP-SHOP WORKSHOP

The wide range of facilities and skills we have at our East Tamaki workshop plays a big part in our relationship with Downer. Because we’re not a franchise-style garage, we can work on different brands and types of machinery, and we have the knowledge and experience backing us up.

This means we provide everything from auto-electrical services to welding all under one roof, saving our customer time and money so they can get their machine up and running as soon as possible.

QUALITY ACCREDITATIONS: ISO 9001 AND ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND

On having ISO 9001

In addition to the stringent KPIs set by Downer, we also follow procedures set out in ISO 9001 to ensure that we deliver a quality service and a high standard of work every time.

As a large company with over 100 people working here, we believe it’s important to have the right systems in place, where we record all the work we do so the there’s accountability and a standard to work to.

ON ACHIEVING ENVIRO-MARK®NZ DIAMOND CERTIFICATION

As we look after Downer’s groundcare and park maintenance equipment, it makes sense that we do it in an environmentally responsible way. This certification demonstrates that we are proactive in doing so, and that any work we do for our customers is done with the idea of minimising and preventing environmental damage on their site.

THE RESULT

In the two years we’ve worked for Downer, we have exceeded their requirement for an 85% customer satisfaction rating. We believe that we can continue to improve on that result, and our goal is to reduce Downer’s goods and services costs by no less than 10% by the 31st of December, 2010.

“Stevenson Engineering do an extremely professional job. The quality of their repairs is second to none. They keep to the timelines set for delivery. Their communication is very good about the progress of the various items of equipment under repair. They’re very responsive to our needs, meeting the KPIs set in our service agreement. They are a pleasure to deal with and I enjoy going to Stevenson to catch up with their team. The atmosphere there is always very positive.”
