David is the mining supervisor for Stevenson Engineering’s East Tamaki heavy plant

Over the course of 22 years, David has worked his way up from an apprentice field service mechanic to leading hand, and eventually, mining supervisor.

He initially joined Stevenson Engineering because he has a keen interest in heavy equipment and machinery, and he wasn’t disappointed. Throughout the years, he has worked on a huge variety of jobs and has fixed everything from lawnmowers to overhauling engines on 150-tonne dumptrucks.

“My favourite part of the job is seeing something come in here really sad and tired-looking, and then seeing it go out how it should be – brand-new, all painted up, stickered up and fully functional again.”

The variety of work that comes through the workshop is one of the reasons he’s stayed in the job as long as he has, and he credits the people he works with as another reason.

“We’re a tight team here. We socialise together and we work well together; it’s all part of the good times we’ve enjoyed here at Stevenson Engineering.”

Coming from a family that was heavily involved in motorsport, it’s only natural that David’s passion for mechanical engineering follows him home too. He has a collection of cars that he restores, and is currently importing another car from Australia to add to the group, much to his wife’s horror.
